The Parlour – Finally Finished

If i had a dollar for every time i walked into the parlour and said, “I hate this room”, i’d probably have enough money to buy another house! It seems crazy that this room has caused me so much trouble. I have rearranged the furniture a 100 times, hung pictures on the walls and then taken them down, added more stuff, taken stuff out, bought new items, moved things around again….nothing seemed to satisfy me. I found this room so very frustrating, but in the end the solution was simple. Stop trying too hard!! I emptied the room and started a fresh. I put back only the basics, a lounge, some cushions, a mat, a coffee table, a mirror, a tiny hall table, some lovely books, a couple of carvers and some interesting items. Then i stopped. I banned myself from adding anything else. And now i am satisfied.

  1. mandy…i love everything (and especially your son enjoying the lounge) and i mean EVERYTHING but….i feel the standard lamp in the corner is a little out of scale. if it was just taller, it would be perfect. i hate to say this after you feel you have redone it 20 times and now are finished, and it’s only a small small quibble. just a matter of swapping it for another and whacking this one in a smaller/lower ceiling-ed room. *in my humble opinion*

    • oh Edwina, i really just wanted to delete this comment and ignore you 😉 but i think you’re right!! *sigh* I think it could be too short.
I’m still calling the room finished, but i’ll keep an eye out for a taller lamp. I’ll keep you updated. :)

  2. I too am guilty of the “too much stuff” design overload. But the living room looks great now. I really like the narrow mirror over the mantel… that’s unexpected, and actually fits the space nicely in an unusual way.

Don’t forget that you’ve only been doing this for a short while! It takes TIME for a space to come together in it’s most ideal arrangement! Right? The few “perfect” items that make a room don’t always show up on schedule…

    • Thanks Victoria. I like the mirror above the fireplace too, even though I usually like things perfectly symmetrical. I also like the oval mirror above the chesterfield. I had hung a few rectangular paintings above the sofa, but they all looked too rigid….too clinical and staged.

  3. Simple and clean – a great room. Classis chesterfield couch and I especially love that gorgeous fireplace mantle. They just don’t make them like that anymore!
