{Crochet} Chunky Monkey Rug

chunky crochet rug

When our DMC Natura Just Cotton XL arrived in store at Yummy Yarn and co, i just knew i needed to design a pattern for a chunky floor rug. The beautiful thing about this yarn is that it is 100% cotton and so soft! It is an easy project to complete on the weekend as this chunky yarn works up quite quickly. This rug can be used as a little floor rug, a lap blanket or even as a fancy bath mat. It’s a very versatile project. Personally, i wouldn’t use it high traffic areas as it’s more of a decorative piece. I’ve got mine on the ground near my bed and it feels so good stepping onto it in the mornings. Anyway, enough chitty chatty blah blah – here’s the pattern in UK terms. I’ll have some US instructions at some stage when i get spare moment. Don’t forget if you make this rug i’d love to see it, so please use #chunkymonkeycrochetrug on social media. :)

  2. Such a pretty rug! The cotton gives it a great stitch definition. Any chance you’ll be adding shipping to NZ from your store in the future?

  3. I normally pass small rugs by… but “this has to be the best look one” that I have seen. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Beautiful rug!!! I wonder how it would work out in chenille yarn? I will have to wait for the US terms because I am totally lost with the “Ch2, tr2tog (counts as 1xtr3tog)” parts of the pattern.

    • Hi Theresa,
I think chenille yarn would be lovely. It would need to be equivalent to a 12/14ply to achieve the same size. I won’t get a chance to complete the US terms for a while as i’m currently working on another project. There are some good conversion charts online that could help you. The tr3tog is the same as as US dc3together. I hope this helps. xx

    • Hi Tina,
I haven’t had a spare moment to start the US version. There are some great conversion charts online that you could use if you’re keen to get started. I am currently working on another project which means i won’t get back to this one for a while. :)

    • I’m not sure what a good replacement would be, but you could try a 14ply yarn and see how it goes. Good luck xx

  5. Thanks for sharing this gorgeous pattern! Love it …. I’m using a cotton / acrylic blend with a size 8 hook. Not as pretty as your pink cotton one! Thanks for sharing ….you’re crochet is just divine !

  6. Make sure you are counting your stitches. It get a little frill in the last 2 rounds but shouldn’t be curling early on. Good luck!

  7. You’d have to experiment a little bit – you could add extra rounds, but you’ll need to make sure that you’re increasing gradually so that it sits flat. As it naturally curls a little on the last few rounds, you won’t need to add many stitches. Hope this helps. :)
