About Me

ABOUT ME

Hi there! I don’t really like talking about myself, so i’ll keep this brief. I’m Mandy, mother of three, guesthouse owner, photographer and avid crafter. I began this blog a few years ago now, as a way to document the decorating progress of my guesthouse. After years of working in a career that didn’t fulfil me, i bought a house in Millthorpe and finally started to indulge my creative side. I’m so glad that i did! You’ll will find a bit of a mixed bag here. I don’t excel at any one thing, more like a ‘jack of all trades, master of none’. And i’m okay with that! I get bored easily, so i need to have many outlets to keep me interested.  One of those creative ideas is Craft as Therapy, which i explain in more detail below. So, welcome to my blog. Feel free to have a good look around and if you’d like to comment or contact me, please do as i love meeting new people. Mandy xx

WHAT IS @CRAFTASTHERAPY?

What is Craft as Therapy? After going through a rather stressful period of my life, i turned to craft as a way to distract myself from the anxiety i was feeling. I had always loved craft and often bounced from one hobby to another, but it wasnt until my mother was diagnosed with brain cancer and my own chronic health condition flared out of control, that i began to craft as a form of therapy.

One of my first #craftastherapy projects. You can see the tutorial here.

A self diagnosed ‘instagram addict‘ i began to tag some of my projects with #craftastherapy. I was pretty stunned by the response i recieved and shortly afterwards many, many fellow crafters started using the tag. It became apparent to me how important craft is as a form of therapy, not just for me, but for many other crafters. Many have shared their stories about why they craft for therapy. Some are suffering mental illness, infertility issues, chronic illness, physical illness…….and some craft simply craft because it’s cheaper than therapy and keeps them smiling.

Due to the larger number of Instagrammers using the tag, i created a handle called @craftastherapy and invited a group of moderators to jump on board and take turns choosing features from the #craftastherapy tag and posting inspirational messages. The hastag continues to grow, as does the number of followers, and a beautiful community has blossomed.

Does craft make you happy? Relieve stress? Distract you from illness? To join our friendly community all you need to do is tag your images with #craftastherapy. I hope to see you on Instagram! :) You can follow me on Instagram here @crochetbyredagape and here @redagape for interior inspo.

  1. Hi Mandy,

I’m with Flea Market Decor magazine, and your project Robyn’s home on Houzz.com has caught my eye. It would be a great fit for our magazine, and I’m interested in featuring it in our summer issue. Let me know if you’re interested in working with me on it, and if you have high resolution images available for press use.

    Cheers,

    Victoria Van Vlear

  2. Hi Mandy.ive just found your site and love it.
My girlfriend and i discovered a comeback love of crocheting 6 months ago and love it. Its creative, relaxing, inspiring, exciting and grows so quick.
We tell our hubbies, we are addicted, and its a good thing to be addicted to.
A new bought colour or 5…., brings so much joy.
    Bless you.

    • Isn’t it funny how crochet is coming back in a BIG way. There are worse things to be addicted to Sally! I use crochet to relax too – I just LOVE it. Thanks for leaving a comment here. Xx

  3. I did not know tht there was an Internation Crochet Day!!!! Thanks for letting me know!! I agree wtih the lady who is going to tell her failmy that it is a 2nd Mother’s Day. It is also Grandparent’s Day, so I get a double day. Hmmmm, I could start dropping hints for “International Crochet Day” gifts. There is a lovely silk bamboo yarn I want to use for a shawl….there is a set of ergonomic hooks with the handle and interchangeable hooks, not to mention the hooks that light up, oh I could make a very long list. I will settle for a day of peace and quite so I can just crochet!!!! = D

  9. Hi Mandy- just love your blog, webpage, crochet and colours! I noticed you’re in Millthorpe, I lived there about 20 years ago, now I live in Bathurst. Have you ever considered hosting a crochet retreat/ day, I would love that!! 😊🎀💗

    • Hello! yes i have, but i live 2hrs from Millthorpe so logistically it would be a bit tricky. I love the idea though! Maybe one day when i live closer. :)
