A Crochet cushion with a cute mandala pattern will be cozy, fun, and a decorative addition for personalizing any relaxing or working spot (chair, sofa, bed, etc!). So, today, you can learn how to crochet a mandala pillow with this colorful mandy’s mega mandala pillow pattern. I will teach you to make a round pillow using four beautiful shades that will impress everybody. I loved placing over the chair seating to work cozily on my crochet projects. However, you can do anything, whether sending it as a soft gift (who does not love a pillow!) or simply relaxing with this most appealing pillow.

Mandy’s Mega Mandala Cushion

Crochet Mandalas are no longer flat, unusable pieces (though appealing!) because there is a little practical idea I will share that stands first on both factors and softness as an addition we all love. Crochet mandala seems complicated to beginners at first, but you will mostly need basic crochet skills while following my mandala crochet pillow pattern (hopefully others, too!). Although I named it Mega, you only need a few spare hours to work on this. If you don’t know how to work in the rounds, you could learn and practice following my crochet pillow tutorial.

I wrote this in UK terms, but there are shorthand US terms and instructions at the end of this tutorial. Throughout this pillow mandala tutorial, I shared the pictures for each step with the complete instructions and a quick guide to work on each instruction.

How To Crochet Mandy’s Mandala Pillow?

Here is a quick summary of how you can make my mandy’s pillow without complete instructions to understand better the pattern and its steps:

  • You must make two round panels working in the round and changing the color in each round (repeating four!) from center to outward. I have decided to make round stripes of different widths.
  • The circumference will be larger than the actual final one because the extra portion for each panel will contribute to the pillow’s half height.
  • Then, you will sew both edges of the panel together and leave space for the stuffing to fill and then add.
  • If you want to add an existing pillow, you can attach a zipper inside.

Advanced Stitches Abbreviations & Guides

While following this crochet pillow pattern, you (especially beginners!) will notice some strange and uncommon abbreviations. But surprisingly, they are much easier.

  • tr2tog – treble two together: After yarning over and pulling through two loops, again yarning over and pulling through two loops, you will get the two loops on the hook. That is the same as general. Now, instead of pulling through the other two, you will insert the hook into the next stitch after yarning over twice and pull up a loop. * Yarn over again and pull through two loops *. Yarn over and pull through all three loops.
  • tr3tog – treble three together: For the treble three-together, after *, you will again insert the hook into the next stitch after the twice yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through two, yarn over and pull through two, and then, at last, yarn over and pull through the remaining four.

At first, they will be a little difficult to remember, but after practicing, you can easily create them.

Stitch Abbreviations you will need to know And Quick Guides:

For the help of beginners, I decided to provide a guide that will be helpful to follow my pattern. Here are guides and abbreviation meanings you will need to know:

  • sl st – slip stitch: To make a slip stitch, insert the hook into the required stitch, yarn over (wrap yarn around!), pull up a loop, and pass through both loops. It will help to fasten the rounds here and start a new one.
  • ch – chain: To chain, yarn over and pull through a loop. It will make the foundation round and then grow outward.
  • dc – double crochet: For this, yarn over and insert the hook into the desired stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You will have three loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through two loops, and again yarn over and pull through the remaining loops. It will result here a little spacy texture by skipping the chains.
  • htr – half treble: For this, yarn over and pull through a loop after inserting the hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull through all the three loops. Little less space, as you can notice in the pic.
  • tr – treble: To make this, yarn over (2 times!), insert hook to stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. You will have four. You will need to remove the six loops by yarnover and pull two by two.
  • dtr – double treble: You will need to yarn over three times, inserting the hook and pulling through to get five loops. Then remove two by two.
  • magic loop

You will notice that all these are basic crochet stitches that even beginners know.

As mentioned, I made two mandalas and stitched them together over a round cushion insert. It’s like two cushions in one, with a different color sequence on the other side. If you make one of my mega mandalas, please tag #mandysmegamandala on social media. If you’re looking for a smaller mandala to crochet, please check out Mandy’s Mandala and my Sunnyside Up Mandala. Enjoy!
