Pretty Puffy Square Tutorial

I personally love the popcorn stitch (though sometimes I cannot differentiate between puff and bobble stitch!) because of the texture it offers. Today, I decided to show off it as a popcorn stitch square in four beautiful colors to make a cushion. However, you can use them, whether as blankets, bags, or anything else in your favorite color scheme.

How To Crochet Popcorn Stitch?

Popcorn stitch may look intimidating at first, but it is really simple to do. All you need will be to do 5 double crochet stitches, worked into a single stitch and secured with a chain stitch.

popcorn stitch

So to start, Simply work 5x treble crochet or double crochet into the desired stitch, then pull up the loop a little in the last tr and remove your hook. Don’t worry it won’t be removed for long.

Insert your hook into the top of the first tr that you made, and then insert the hook into the last treble (where you pulled the loop out a little). Pull the loop of the last tr through the top of the first treble (bringing them together behind the other trs) and secure with a chain.

For this pattern, each popcorn stitch is followed by another chain, so there are two chains in a row. For example, where the instructions state to form a PC (popcorn stitch), this will include the securing chain, and then you will be asked to ch again (ch-1 space). So put simply, this pattern is repeated – 5tr, ch1, ch1. I hope this makes sense.

Materials You Will Need

Yarn:  A thin yarn such as fingering weight is perfect. I used DMC Natura Just Cotton in the following colors:

  • A – Aguamarina
  •  B – Rose Soraya
  • C – Blue Jeans
  •  D – Ibiza

Hook – 4mm

Yarn Needle

Stitches UK Terms

Below are the techniques that will used in this crochet square pattern:

Magic Ring: It is a technique to start working in rounds. To make it, wrap the yarn around your fingers to make a loop, then insert your hook into the loop and pull up a loop of yarn. You then secure it with a chain stitch.

Ch – Chain: To make a chain, you make a slipknot on your hook, then yarn over, and pull the yarn through the loop. Each of these loops is a chain stitch.

Ss – Slip Stitch: The slip stitch is pretty simple. You insert your hook into the stitch, then yarn over, and pull the yarn through both loops on your hook. It’s usually used to join work when crocheting in rounds or rows.

dc:  It is equal to the single crochet in the US. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. Now, yarn over and pull through all two loops on your hook.

htr: It is equal to half-double crochet in the US: You yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, yarn over again, and pull through all three loops on the hook.

tr: Treble Crochet: It is equal to double crochet in the US. You yarn over, insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over again, and pull through the loop. Now, yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on your hook.
