Square 5 – The Aztec Granny Square

 Aztec Granny Square

The Aztec Granny Square is square number five of the Casual Granny CAL. That’s right! We’re half way through. Hooray!! This square features sharp angles created by trebling stitches together. Because this square has lots of open spaces, it will benefit from some blocking to create a strong square shape.

Step by step images accompany the pattern in UK terms below and there are US instructions written at the end. You will also find a universal chart towards the end of the post.

Newbies to the Casual Granny CAL

If you are making the blanket, you should have 40 squares made at the end of this month – 8 x square 1, 8 x square 2,  8 x Square 3 and 8x Square 4 and 8x Square 5.

The Aztec Granny Square – Square 5 (make 8)

Paintbox Yarn Cotton DK, 100% Cotton, 50g ball/125m per ball: Peach Orange (455), Raspberry Pink (444) and Blush Pink (454) (0r your own choice of yarn with compatible hook)

3.5mm crochet hook (you might prefer to use a size 4mm)

Approximately 12 x 12cm (5 x 5 inches)

Abbreviations (US)

St(s) = stitch(es)

Sp(s) = space(s)

ch = chain

ch sp = chain space

slst = slip stitch

tr = treble (dc)

dtr = double treble (tr)

rep = repeat

beg = beginning

Special Stitches

Double Treble (dtr)  (US tr)– yarn over hook twice, insert hook into stitch or space, yarn over and pull through, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through the final two loops.

Double Treble Five Together  (dtr5tog) (US tr5tog) – *yarn over hook twice, insert into st or space, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over pull through two loops, yarn over pull through two loops, rep from 4 more times, yarn over pull through all 6 loops.

Rnd 1 – With Yarn A make a magic ring, ch5 (counts as tr, ch2), *(3tr, ch2) rep from* 2 more times, 2tr, slst into the 3rdch of the initial ch 5 [12tr, 4 x ch2]

Rnd 2 – slst into ch-2 sp, ch 6 (counts as tr, ch3), tr in the same sp, *tr in each of the next 3 st, (tr, ch3, tr) in the next ch-sp, rep from * 2 more times, tr in the next three st, slst into 3rdch of initial ch6, fasten off. [20tr, 4x ch3]

Rnd 3 – Attach Yarn B with a slst in any corner ch-sp, ch8 (counts as tr, ch5), tr in the same sp, *tr in each of the next 5 st, (tr, ch5, tr) in the corner ch-sp, rep from * 2 more times, tr in each of the next 5 st, slst into 3rdch of the initial ch8, slst into corner sp [28tr, 4x ch5]

Rnd 4 – ch4 (counts as dtr), 2dtr, ch5, 3dtr in the same sp, *ch4, skip 1 st, dtr5tog, ch4, skip 1 st, (3dtr, ch5,  3dtr), rep from * 2 more times, ch4, skip 1st, dtr5tog, ch4, skip 1 st, slst into top of beg ch, fasten off. [24dtr, 4x ch5, 4x ch4]

Rnd 5

Attach Yarn C with a slst in any corner ch-sp, ch3 (counts as tr), tr, ch3, 2tr in the same sp, *tr in each of the next 3st, 4tr in the ch-4 sp, tr2tog over the point of the dtr5tog from the prev rnd, 4tr in the next ch-4 sp, tr in each of the next 3st, (2tr, ch3, 2tr) in the corner sp, rep from * 2 more times, tr in each of the next 3st, 4tr in the ch-4 sp, tr2tog over the point of the dtr5tog from the prev rnd, 4tr in the next ch-4 sp, tr in each of the next 3st, slst into top of beg ch and fasten off [72tr, 4x tr2tog, 4x ch3]

Rnd 5

    A very pretty new square, but my favourite is still the heart with the flower a close second! It’s going to look fabulous when it’s all finished. I look forward to the new squares each time!
