Wall Banner Tutorial

handmade wall banner tutorialHave fun, regret nothing! I made this wall banner for our rumpus room and if you can sew in a straight line, then you can make one too. :) All you need is some fabric, cotton, a rod, decorative thread and a ruler.

Step 1 – Measure  and cut your fabric. Mine is 20×27 inches.

Step2 – Mark 10 inches across to find the middle of the base and then mark 10 inches up either side and rule to from two joining lines.

Step 3 – Cut off these excess triangles.

Step 4 –  Pin the seams and then iron them flat. I started with the pointed end, then the sides and finally the top. The top is folded down (temporarily) about 4 inches to accommodate the rod.

Step 5 – I inserted the rod and sat the banner between two chairs to make sure it was level. It’s much easier to fix any issues now rather than later.

Step 6 – Sew the seams, making sure you leave the top until last.

Step 7 – Refold the  loop for the rod casing, pin in place and then sew.

Step 8 – Hand stitch, using decorative thread, the quote you have chosen.

DIY Wall Banner with Gold Stitching

wall banner craft tutorialThis DIY wall banner was a craft project that was born mostly from items i had in my craft stash. I found some fabric i had screen printed while i was cleaning up the Hen’s Den (aka craft shed) and while i wasn’t keen to make anymore cushions, i didn’t want the prints to go to waste. I printed a couple of these gold hearts and turned one into the cushion you can see in the above image. I love a good craft clean up because you always find things you’d forgotten about. After a quick search i had gold thread, gold rope, black fabric, tassels and an idea! Obviously, the cleaning would have to wait for another day. :)

The Steps
1. sketch a rough plan of how you want your banner to look.
2. cut your fabric to the size you want. Mine is 15 x 30 inches finished with allowances made for hemming and inserting dowel at either end. Iron and sew a hem down either side on the fabric.
3. Hem the top and bottom and then turn over again to create a tunnel for the dowel.
4. Using a fabric pencil sketch your design onto the fabric.
5. Attach the embroidery hoop and using a backstitch hand stitch your design. A running stitch would work too.
6. Pin the heart into place before stitching.
7. Stitch a little in from the edge so the heart has a slight fraying effect.
8. Insert dowel and tie on tassels.
9. Attach rope to the top of dowel and you’re done! :)
