Finished Size

The finished bag is 10.5” wide with a shoulder strap approximately 38″ long, suitable to be worn as a crossbody bag.

Materials Needed

  • 1 Roll of Ispie Raffia Yarn in Oatmeal (273 yds per roll) or equivalent
  • G/6-4.25mm Crochet Hook
  • Stitch Marker
  • Blocking Mats and T-pins
  • Steam Iron
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations (US Crochet Terminology)

  • ch = chain
  • st(s) = stitch(es)
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch

Front and Back Circle Panels (Make 2)

  1. Start with a magic circle.
  2. Round 1: Work 8 hdc in the circle. Mark the first hdc with a stitch marker. (8 sts)
  3. Round 2: 2 hdc in each st around. (16 sts)

Continue increasing each round following the established pattern

    • Round 3: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in the next st] around. (24 sts)
    • Round 4: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 2 sts] around. (32 sts)
    • Round 5: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 3 sts] around. (40 sts)
    • Round 6: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 4 sts] around. (48 sts)
    • Round 7: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 5 sts] around. (56 sts)
    • Round 8: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 6 sts] around. (64 sts)
    • Round 9: Repeat [2 hdc in the next st, 1 hdc in each of the next 7 sts] around. (72 sts)

Sl st into the next st and fasten off. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

Purse Gusset

  1. Ch 75
  2. Row 1: 1 hdc in the 2nd ch from the hook, 1 hdc in each ch across, turn. (74 sts)
  3. Rows 2-5: Ch 1, 1 hdc in each st across, turn. (74 sts)
  4. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

Purse Strap

  1. Ch 146
  2. Row 1: 1 hdc in 2nd ch from the hook, 1 hdc in each ch across, turn. (145 sts)
  3. Cut the yarn and sew in the ends.

Blocking

  1. Lay out all 4 pieces on blocking mats.
  2. Pin the shapes into place, ensuring the circles are the same size and flat.
  3. The gusset should be laid out flat without stretching.
  4. The strap should be stretched to 40” and pinned.
  5. Hold a steam iron on the lowest heat setting briefly about 1” above the pinned pieces. Do not touch the pieces directly with the iron.
  6. Leave the pieces pinned until completely cooled, roughly 15-20 minutes.

Assembling the Bag

  1. Lay one circle panel down on the right side.
  2. Sew the gusset’s long edge to the circle’s edge using the whip stitch.
  3. Place the other circle panel on top, on the right side.
  4. Sew the other side of the gusset to the outer edge of the second circle panel with the whip stitch.
  5. Sew the ends of the strap onto the outside of the gusset.
  6. Sew in any remaining ends.
