ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):

  • CH = chain
  • DC = double crochet
  • RS = right side

NOTE:

  • The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.

Step by step Pattern

  • Setup: Leave a lengthy tail for cinching the top of the hat closed. Chain 69. SL ST in the first chain to form a ring.
  • Round 1 (RS): Chain 2. In the same stitch make [2 DC, CH 2, SC]. Skip 2 chains. *In the next stitch make [2 DC, CH 2, SC]. Skip 2 chains. Repeat from * to end. SL ST to join in the first stitch. (69 stitches and 23 chain-2 spaces)
  • Round 2: Turn. SL ST into first chain-2 space. Chain 2. In the same space make [2 DC, CH 2, SC]. *In the next chain-2 space make [2 DC, CH 2, SC]. Repeat from * to end. SL ST to join in the first stitch. (69 stitches and 23 chain-2 spaces)
  • Round 3 to Round 14: Repeat Round 2.
  • Round 15: Chain 1. Turn. SC in each SC and in each DC around. Skip all chain-2 spaces. *At the same time, work 3 SC decreases evenly spaced throughout the round. SL ST to join in the first stitch. (66)
  • Button Band:
  • Row 1: Chain 11. Turn. SC in the second chain from the hook. SC in each chain and in each brim stitch around. Do not join. (76) – The beginning chain will form a tab that will overlap the end of the band.

  • Attach button, going through both layers of the overlapped band.
  • At the top of the hat, weave the beginning tail through the foundation row about every ½ inch. Pull gently to cinch the fabric. Secure the yarn.
  • If desired, attach a faux-fur or yarn pompom. Weave in ends.
