Skills Used: Creating a magic ring, single crochets, and using chains and double crochets to crochet textured petals. It also demonstrates how to seamlessly switch yarn colors for vibrant designs and how to assemble and stuff the flower for added volume.

Beginners can practice precise stitch placement and learn finishing techniques like slip stitching to close rounds.

Guide Span: 12 Minutes Only

Personalization Tips: There are loads of color combos that the tutor shares but most has the same pattern: two shades of one color including the light and dark. Colors used are purple, pink, green and yellow, etc. Add embellishments such as beads in the center. The size can be adjusted by using thicker yarn or a larger hook, and you could create layered flowers by stacking multiple pieces together.

This crocheted flower tutorial is ideal for quick, handmade gifts. The flower consists two colors, one of which is used for all petals and is perfect for beginners because it comes together quickly and easily. As mentioned, To create the keychain, sew two flower pieces together, stuff them with polyester fiber for volume, and attach a keyring. You will be guided through both the written instructions on the video plus the verbal instructions. Here is a quick overview of this tutorial other than what we have done:

Special Notes

  • For your starting chain, use a hook one size larger than the rest of your project. E.g. start with 5mm, then switch to 4mm.
  • All three stitches are one-row repeats for simple, textured patterns.
  • Adjust foundation chains as indicated for each stitch.
  • For color changing tips, see “Color Change” section in each pattern.

Pattern

1. Cluster V Stitch

Foundation:

  • With larger hook, ch a multiple of 3 (e.g., 24).
  • Switch to smaller hook for the pattern.

Row 1 (Setup):

  • Begin in 6th ch from hook: Work a Cluster V stitch as follows:
    1. Cluster (dc2tog):
      • Yarn over, insert into chain, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two.
      • Yarn over, insert into same chain, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two.
      • Yarn over and pull through all three loops on hook.
    2. ch 2
    3. Repeat Cluster (dc2tog) in same chain.
  • Skip next 2 chains, work Cluster V stitch (as above) in following chain.
  • Repeat across until 3 ch remain.
  • In final ch, work 1 dc.

Row 2 (Repeat):

  • Start with ch 3 (counts as dc) or use a stacked single crochet (see tip below).
  • Turn.
  • Work a Cluster V stitch in every ch-2 space across the row.
  • At row end, work 1 dc into last ch-2 space or into turning chain.

Repeat Row 2 for desired length.

Stacked Single Crochet Tip:

  • In first st, sc.
  • Insert hook into side bar of that sc, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through two (acts as dc substitute).

Color Change:

  • Begin new color on final yarn-over of previous row’s last dc.

2. Herringbone Double Crochet Stitch

Foundation:

  • With larger hook, ch to desired length (no multiple needed).
  • Switch to smaller hook for pattern.

Row 1 (Setup):

  • For first st:
    • Work stacked single crochet (see above) OR
    • Start in 4th ch from hook for traditional dc.
  • Herringbone DC:
    1. Yarn over, insert into next chain, yarn over, pull up loop.
    2. Without yarning over, pull through first loop on hook.
    3. Yarn over, pull through remaining two loops on hook.
  • Repeat across, ending with a regular dc in last st.

Row 2 (Repeat):

  • Ch 2 or 3, or use stacked single crochet to start.
  • Work Herringbone DC across row in each st.
  • End with regular dc in last st (tip: to keep sides straight, work into the side of the stacked single crochet).

Repeat Row 2 for desired length.

Tip:

  • For pronounced herringbone effect, work 2 rows before color change.

3. Lotus Stitch

Foundation:

  • With larger hook, ch a multiple of 6 + 5 (e.g., 18 + 5 = 23).
  • Switch to smaller hook.

Row 1 (Setup):

  • In 2nd ch from hook, sc.
  • Skip next 2 ch.
  • In next ch, work Lotus Stitch:
    • Puff Stitch: Yarn over, insert hook, pull up loop (to match height of other loops); repeat 2 more times for 3 loops total; yarn over, pull through all loops (6 on hook), yarn over, pull through last two loops.
    • ch 2
    • Repeat Puff Stitch two more times into same chain, separated by ch 2 (total of 3 puffs and 2 ch-2 between them).
  • Skip 2 ch, sc in next ch.
  • Repeat across until 3 ch remain.
  • In last ch, work two puff stitches separated by ch 2.

Row 2 (Repeat):

  • Ch 1, turn.
  • sc in first st.
  • In sc from previous row, work Lotus Stitch (3 puff stitches + ch 2 between them).
  • sc in middle puff of Lotus Stitch from previous row.
  • Repeat across, ending with a sc and two puff stitches (in last sc).

Repeat Row 2 for desired length.

Lotus Stitch Tips:

  • Gently pull loops up to easily complete puffs.
  • Mark single crochets as needed to stay oriented.

Conclusion

You now have three easy, textured stitches, each with a one-row repeat:

  • Cluster V Stitch: Squishy, decorative, classic with extra dimension.
  • Herringbone DC: Gentle diagonal effect; easy and rhythmic.
  • Lotus Stitch: Unique and showstopping with puffs and strong texture.

Try with variegated yarns for dramatic effects. All stitches are simple to memorize, giving beautiful results that look advanced but are actually beginner-friendly.

Pattern Corrections & Tips

  • Always use a larger hook for your foundation chain to avoid bowing or tightness.
  • For color changes, change on the last yarn-over of the previous row.
  • Mark chain spaces and stitch positions as needed for accuracy.
  • Play with stacked single crochet starts for straight edges.
  • Adjust row repeats for desired project size and shape.
