Special Notes
- Each motif is worked in the round and consists of only two rounds.
- Motifs are designed to be joined as you go in the second round.
- The “pineapple”/“leaf” clusters are formed by working three unfinished double crochets into the designated space, then completing them together.
- You can increase motif size by using a thicker yarn and larger hook.
- Pattern correction and tip: See below.

MOTIF INSTRUCTIONS
Round 1
- Foundation Ring:
Ch 8, join with sl st to first ch to form a ring. - Start Pineapple/Leaf Clusters:
- (Ch 4 [counts as first dc and ch-1]),*
- In ring, work 3 dc2tog (see Special Stitch) clusters as follows:
- [Yarn over, insert hook into ring, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops] 3 times in total (for 3 partial dc—do not finish each), yarn over, pull through all loops on hook to close the cluster.*
- Ch 5,
- Repeat [3 unfinished dc in ring, close together, ch 5] until you have 8 clusters in total,
- After last cluster, ch 5 and join with sl st in top of beginning ch-4.
- You should have 8 clusters (called “leaves” or “pineapples”), each separated by ch-5 spaces.
Round 2
- Slip st into next ch-sp, ch 1, sc in same sp as join.
- *(Ch 5),
- In next ch-5 space, work 3 unfinished dc, close together (pineapple cluster), ch 2, work 3 unfinished dc, close together (2 clusters in same sp), ch 2, work 3 unfinished dc, close together (3 clusters in same sp). (This forms a corner.)*
- Ch 5, sc into next ch-5 sp, ch 5,
- In the next ch-5 sp, repeat Step 3 (corner).
- Continue around motif, so there are four corners (sides will have ch-5 + sc + ch-5).
- After the last corner, ch 5, sl st to first sc to join.
- Fasten off.
JOINING MOTIFS
- On subsequent motifs, join as you work Round 2:
- When you reach a corner ch-2 space, replace one ch-2 with a sl st into the corresponding ch-2 sp of the completed motif.
- For side ch-5 spaces, replace the center ch-2 or ch-3 with a sl st into the neighboring motif’s ch-5 sp.
- Always keep two “leaves” of each motif free/unjoined between joining points for proper corners.
Assembly
- Continue making motifs, joining them at corners and sides as described above for your desired project (blouse, shawl, hat crown, etc.).
- Block finished piece for best results.
Conclusion
This elegant lacy square motif is quick to make and versatile. By joining squares as you go, you avoid tedious seaming later and can build your project as large or small as you wish. The pattern is forgiving and ideal for light, summery items.
Pattern Correction
- Transcription Simplification: The original instructions were conversational and sometimes repeated; the pattern above standardizes and clarifies instructions.
- Cluster confusion: The double crochet cluster is made by omitting the last step of each dc (leaving loops on the hook), then yarning over and pulling through all loops at once.
- Ch counts: Ensure always 8 clusters in Round 1 and 4 corners in Round 2.
Tip
- Yarn Choice: A smooth, light-colored cotton thread or bamboo yarn highlights the lace pattern best. Swatch first for drape.
- Blocking: Blocking your motifs before joining helps with neatness and alignment.
- Joining: Use locking stitch markers to help align motifs when joining multiple squares.
