Crocheting the Fish Body
The tutorial begins with the white yarn to create the head of the fish:
-
Magic Ring: Start with a magic ring. The video demonstrates how to create one for those unfamiliar.
-
Working in a Spiral: The project is worked in a spiral, meaning rounds are not closed with slip stitches. A stitch marker is used to keep track of the beginning of each round.
-
Initial Rounds (White Yarn):
-
Round 1: Work single crochet stitches into the magic ring.
-
Round 2: The sequence involves single crochet and increases.
-
Round 3: The sequence is two single crochet stitches followed by an increase.
-
Round 4: The sequence is three single crochet stitches followed by an increase.
-
Round 5: The sequence is four single crochet stitches followed by an increase.
-
Round 6: The sequence is five single crochet stitches followed by an increase.
-
Round 7: The sequence is six single crochet stitches followed by an increase.
-
Round 8: Work single crochet stitches in each stitch around without increases.
-
Changing Color and Continuing the Body
The color is changed to blue (or the chosen second color) for the next section of the body:
-
Color Change: The video demonstrates how to switch colors by making the first stitch of the new color and securing the old and new yarn ends.
-
Rounds 9-15 (Blue Yarn): Continue working single crochet stitches in each stitch around. No increases or decreases are made in these rounds.
Adding Facial Features
Before decreasing, the safety eyes and cheeks are added:
-
Placing Eyes: The eyes are placed between rounds 6 and 7, counting from the magic ring. They are spaced eight stitches apart.
-
Adding Cheeks: Pink yarn is used to embroider small cheek details below the eyes using a yarn needle. The video notes that this is an approximate placement and may require adjustment.
Decreasing and Closing the Body
The body shaping continues with decreases and stuffing:
-
Round 16: The sequence is two single crochet stitches followed by a decrease. The video demonstrates how to perform a decrease.
-
Round 17: The sequence is one single crochet stitch followed by a decrease.
-
Round 18: Continue with the sequence of one single crochet stitch followed by a decrease.
-
Stuffing: The fish is stuffed with amigurumi filling during or before this round.
-
Closing: After the last decrease round, a slip stitch is made, and the yarn is cut long. The remaining opening is sewn shut using a yarn needle, passing the needle through each stitch to pull the opening closed.
Crocheting and Attaching Fins
Four fins are needed: two for the sides and two for the back:
-
Fins (White Yarn):
-
Round 1: Start with a magic ring and work single crochet stitches into it.
-
Round 2: The sequence is one single crochet stitch followed by an increase.
-
Rounds 3 & 4: Work single crochet stitches in each stitch around.
-
Round 5: The sequence is one single crochet stitch followed by a decrease.
-
-
-
Finishing: Close with a slip stitch, chain one, and cut the yarn long for sewing.
-
-
Attaching Side Fins: The side fins are attached on the third blue round, in line with the eyes. The edge of the fin is sewn closed before attaching.
-
Attaching Back Fins: The back fins are attached at the closed end of the fish body. One fin is placed pointing upwards, and the other downwards, rather than side-by-side. The video explains to sew them into the center where the body was closed.
The video concludes by showing the finished amigurumi fish.
