Crochet Chunky Rug Pattern

This amazing rug pattern has been made with 100% cotton yarn which is soft and long-lasting! It is an easy project to complete on the weekend as this chunky yarn works quickly. This rug can be used as a little floor rug, a lap blanket, or a bath mat. It’s a very versatile project.

Here’s the pattern in UK terms. I’ll have some US instructions at some stage when I get a spare moment.

You will need –

6x balls of DMC Natura Just Cotton XL (makes a rug around 93cm)
1 crochet hook size 6.5mm
yarn need and scissors

Round 1 – Begin with a ch6, then ss into the first ch to make a loop. Ch2, tr2tog (counts as 1xtr3tog), then ch1. Work 7 more (tr3tog, ch1) into the loop and then ss into the top of the first tr3tog. (8x tr2tog, 8ch)

Round 2 – ss into the ch-1 space and ch3, tr (counts as tr, ch1, tr). Work (tr, ch1, tr) into each ch-1 space around. Ss into the top of the first tr. (8 x tr, ch1, tr).

Round 3 – ss into the ch-1 space, ch2, tr2tog (counts as 1tr3tog), then ch2. Work another tr3tog in the space between the two (tr, ch1, tr) groups then ch2. Continue to work (1tr3tog, ch2) in every ch-1 space and into each space between the (tr, ch1, tr) groups. Ss into the top the first tr3tog (16x tr3tog,ch2 groups)

Round 4 – ss into the next ch-2 space, work ch4, tr (counts as tr, ch2, tr). Continue to work (tr, ch2, tr) into each ch-2 space. Ss into the top of the first t. (16 x tr, ch2, tr groups)

Round 5 – ss into the first ch-2 space, ch2, tr2tog (counts as 1tr3tog), then ch1. Work 1tr,ch1 into the space between the (tr, ch2, tr) groups from the previous round. Continue to work (1tr3tog, ch1) into each ch-2 space and (tr, ch) into the spaces where there are two tr side by side. That is, (tr3tog, ch1, tr, ch1) repeat around. Ss into the top of the first tr3tog. (16x tr3tog, ch1, tr, ch1)

Round 6 – ss into the next ch-1 space and ch4 (counts as 1tr, ch2). Continue to work 1tr, ch2 into each ch-1 space around. Ss into the top of the first tr. (32x tr, ch2)

Round 7 – ss into first ch-2 space and ch4, tr (counts as tr, ch2, tr). Continue to work tr, ch2, tr into every ch-2 space from the previous round. Ss into the top of the initial tr. (32x tr, ch2, tr)

Round 8 – ss into the next ch-2, ch5 (counts as 1tr, ch3). Continue to tr, ch3 into each ch-2 space from the previous round. ss into the top of the initial tr. (32x tr, ch3)

Round 9 – ss into the first ch-3 space and work 4dc. Continue to work 4dc into each ch-3 space from the previous round. ss into the first dc. (128dc or 32groups of 4dc)

Round 10 – ss into the next 3dc and then into the space between the 4dc groups. Ch4, tr (counts as tr, ch2, tr) then ch1. Continue to work tr, ch2, tr, ch1 into each space between the 4dc groups. Ss into the top of the first tr. (32x tr, ch2, tr, ch1).

Round 11 – ss into the ch-2 space and ch2, 2tr (counts as 3tr). Then work 1tr into the ch-1 space. Continue to work 3tr into each ch-2space and 1tr into each ch-1space around. Ss into the top of the first tr. (128tr)

Round 12 – ch2, (counts as one tr), then work 1tr into each of the next 2 stitches. Work 2tr into the next stitch. Continue to this pattern of 1tr, 1tr, 1tr, 2tr alternating into each stitch around. Ss into the top of the first tr. (160tr)

Round13 – Work 1dc into the next four stitches and then 2dc in the fifth. Continue this patter of 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 1dc, 2dc around. Ss into the first dc. (192 dc).

Round 14 – ch5, skip 3dc and ss in the next stitch. Continue to ch5, ss in every 4^th stitch around. (48x ch5)

Round 15 – ss into the 3^rd ch of the first ch5 group, then ch5, ss into the next ch5 group. Continue to ch5, ss into each of the ch5 groups around. (48x ch5)

Round 16 – ss into the next ch-5 space and ch4 (counts as one tr, 1ch ), then work (tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr) into the same space. *Ss into the next ch-5 space. Work (tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr) into the following ch-5 space.* repeat from * to * around. Ss into the top of the first tr. (24x tr groups).

Round 17 – ss into first ch-1 space, ch2 (counts as 1tr), then (tr, ch1, tr) into each of the next two ch-1 spaces, tr in the last ch-1 space. Work 1htr into the spaces either side of the ss from the previous round. Repeat this pattern around – tr, (tr, ch1, tr), (tr, ch1, tr), tr, htr, htr. Ss into the top of the first tr. (24x groups).

Round 18 – ss into the centre of the ‘petal’, ie. In between the two (tr, ch1, tr) groups. Ch5, then tr in between the two htr, ch5, ss into the top of the ‘petal’. Repeat from * to * around. (48x ch-5, 24htr, 24ss)

Round 19 – ss into the 3^rd ch of the first ch-5 space. *Ch5 then ss into the next ch-5 space. * Repeat from * to * around. (48x ch-5, 48ss).

Round 20 – ss into the first ch-5 space, ch3 (counts as 1tr, ch1). Then work tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr, ch1, tr into the same space. *Ss into the next ch-5 space, then in the following ch-5 space work, tr, ch, tr, ch, tr, ch, tr, ch, tr, ch, tr. * Repeat from * to * around. (24x petals)

Round 21 – ss into the first ch-1 space, ch2 (counts as 1tr), then (tr, ch1, tr) into the next 3 ch-1 spaces. Work 1tr into the following ch-1 space and then htr on both sides of the ss from the previous round. Repeat this pattern around – tr, (tr, ch1, tr), (tr, ch1, tr), (tr, ch1, tr), tr, htr, htr. Ss into the top of the first tr. (24 Petals)

Round 22 – ss into the first ch-1 space and ch2, 2tr, ch1 (counts as 3tr, ch1). Work 3tr into the next ch-1 space, ch1 and then 3tr into the following ch-1 space. Into the space between the two htr from the previous round work (1tr, ch1, 1tr) ss into the top of the first tr. (24x petals)
