Making Your Crochet Swiffer Pad

Materials Needed:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight (number 4 yarn), 100% cotton recommended, approximately 110 yards
  • Crochet Hook: 5 mm (H) hook, optionally 4 mm (G) hook for edging
  • Scissors
  • Yarn/Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Markers: Optional
  • Tape Measure: For custom sizing

Step by step pattern

Mop Bottom:

  1. Foundation Chain: With your 5 mm hook, chain 32 stitches.
  2. First Row: SC (single crochet) in the second chain from the hook and each across, for a total of 31 SCs.
  3. Second Row and Beyond: Chain 1, turn the work, then SC in the first stitch. Follow with a bobble stitch in the next stitch, then SC again.
  4. Bobble Stitch Explanation: Yarn over, insert the hook and pull through two loops; repeat in the same stitch until 5 loops are on the hook. Yarn over and pull through all loops.
  5. Continue Pattern: Alternate bobble stitches with single crochets for the entire row.
  6. Repeat Rows: For rows 3 to 14, continue alternating rows of single crochets with rows of the bobble pattern.
  7. Edge Single Crochet: Optionally, switch to a 4 mm hook and SC around the mop pad’s entire edge to create a bordered edge.

Top Straps (Create Two):

  1. Strap Chain: Chain 13 stitches.
  2. Strap Rows: SC in the second chain from the hook and each across for a total of 12 SCs.
  3. Ribbing Effect: Chain 1, turn your work, SC into each back loop only for 16 rows.
  4. Edge SC: With a 4 mm hook, SC around three-fourths of the strap’s edge, leave one edge unworked, and keep a long tail for sewing later.

Assembly:

  1. Positioning: Place the mop bottom with bobbles facing down. Align the straps over the clean side, making sure the ribbed side of the straps faces inwards.
  2. Sewing: Using the long tail from the straps, sew each strap to the corners of the mop bottom securely.
  3. Finish: Weave in all loose ends for a neat finish.

Additional Notes:

  • Adjust your starting chain and the number of rows as needed for your specific Swiffer or mop base.
  • Remember that the bobble stitches should be on the side that faces the floor to aid in cleaning.
