Skills Used: Creating granny squares, working in rounds with double crochets, and changing yarn colors seamlessly. Techniques for shaping are introduced through the use of treble crochets to form the stocking toe.

Additionally, single crochet stitches for joining and for some parts, while making hanging loops involves basic chaining and slip stitching for a polished finish.

Guide Span: 14 Minutes Only

Personalization Tips: There are three color combinations available using red, green, blue and white. However, each stocking can be crocheted using only two colors. The hanging loop can be customized in length or swapped for decorative ribbon. You can also get a larger version by increasing the amount of rows.

Pattern

Granny Square Base

Begin with Color A (center color):

  1. Magic ring OR ch 4, sl st to form a ring.
  2. Ch 2 or 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc into ring (first cluster made), ch 2.
  3. (3 dc into ring, ch 2) three times (for a total of 4 clusters).
  4. Sl st OR hdc into the top of the starting ch 3 (instead of a last ch 2), finishing in the corner.
  5. Pull the yarn tail to close up the ring. Fasten off or change to Color B.

Second Round

With Color B (next shade):

  1. Join in any corner with preferred method.
  2. Ch 2 or 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc into same corner.
  3. (Optional: ch 1 for space between corners. Crocheter’s choice; omit if you like a tighter square).
  4. In the next corner: (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) all in the corner.
  5. Continue around, working (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in each corner, skipping or ch 1 between side clusters as preferred.
  6. When you reach the last corner: 3 dc (to finish the cluster), then hdc into top of starting chain for seamless join, ending in the corner. Fasten off or change to Color C.

Third Round (Forming the Stocking/Tongue)

With Color C (final round):

  1. Join in one corner with preferred method.
  2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in same corner (half of the first corner cluster).
  3. (You may ch 1 or not between clusters, as preferred.)
  4. (3 dc) in each side space until reaching the bottom/next corner.
  5. Work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the corner as usual.
  6. Continue to the bottom center space (opposite the top of stocking):
    • Work 10–12 tr (treble crochets) in this space to form the toe. (Use 10 for thicker yarn, 12 for thinner.)
    • Optional: If you prefer a less pronounced toe, use dc instead.
  7. Continue the granny square pattern: Next corner, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc), then side clusters as previously.
  8. Finish with 3 dc in last corner, hdc into top of starting chain.
  9. Fasten off.

Stocking Top and Hanger

With Color of Your Choice:

  1. Join at “top” left corner (opposite the toe).
  2. Ch 1, sc in same corner.
  3. Sc in each stitch across the top edge (just the top, not the sides). Optionally, sc in the corner space.
  4. Sl st to the first sc.
  5. (Optional) Weave in ends now for ease.

To Create Hanger:
6. Ch 10 (or however long you want your hanging loop).

  1. Sl st into the same top corner.
  2. Sc again in the same corner to reinforce. Do not fasten off.

Seaming the Stocking

  1. Fold your piece in half with right sides facing out, toe and top aligned.
  2. Sc through both layers around the edge of the stocking (sides and toe), matching clusters and stitches as you go. At the toe, place 3 sc in the very corner to round it.
  3. Continue sc along the other side back up to the top.
  4. At the final stitch, fasten off and weave in ends.
  5. (Optional) For a more defined edge, you may sc back up the top edge again.

Conclusion

Your mini granny square stocking is complete!

  • Fill with candies or tiny gifts for ornaments, use as an Advent garland, or simply decorate your tree.
  • This pattern is suitable for beginners and quick enough to make several in one sitting.
  • Try experimenting with rounds or toe length for different looks.

Pattern Corrections

  • If using a different yarn or hook, adjust number of stitches for size and proportion.
  • Toe length (number of tr) may need to be modified for yarn thickness.

Tips

  • Always weave in your ends before final seaming for a tidier finish.
  • Play with color changes for a vintage, modern, or themed look.
  • Reinforce the hanger loop with extra sc for extra strength when hanging on the tree.
  • If your square looks wonky after the toe, give the finished stocking a gentle steam block.
