What is granny square, by the way? The granny square is a square-shaped motif that is crocheted by working in a round from center to outward. Tips For Crochet Granny Square Patterns

Below are the important tips about crochet granny squares that need to be addressed:

Block the squares: Granny squares may have curled edges and irregular shapes after completing them. Blocking grannies gives them a professional, flat, and uniform square shape. So, it is best practice to block each granny square by wetting them and pinning them on the board to dry (wet blocking).

Count the stitches: I have repeated this aspect in many granny square tutorials because counting each stitch helps you make a granny square correctly. For this, you can also use the stitch markers.

How To Join Granny Squares?

When you have a bundle of squares, they should be assembled. You can use various techniques, such as follows:

Advertisements

Single crochet joins: Here, you align the squares and insert the hook on the upper loops of the corner of both squares. Then, you perform the single crochet through the length. This method will create a beautiful border for joining sides.

Lace Join: This method will create a lacy design on the joining sides. You can learn this from my granny square lace join tutorial.

Using the Yarn needle: This method is quicker than the single crochet but not as clean. We again alight the squares and insert the needle at the corners. Then bring the needle back through the next stitch, then through again, insert to the next, and so on, until you tie the yarn.

Techniques Needed to Crochet Granny Square?

Here are the quick guides for the general techniques that you will need to crochet granny squares of all types (almost):

  • Chain Stitch: To do the chain, yarn over and pull through the loop on the crochet hook.
  • Stitch Skipping: To skip a chain or other stitch, insert the hook next to the stitch being skipped instead of working on that stitch. While crocheting grannies, you crochet some chains and insert the hook into the desired stitch.
  • Working in rounds: You will crochet a small circle with chains joined by a slip stitch or work chains around the magic circle. Then whatever you will crochet around it will be in the rounds.
  • Double crochet: We shall need to crochet the clusters of double crochet in granny squares. To do double crochet, Yarn over, insert the hook into the stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop. YO and pull through the first two loops on the hook, yarn over again, and pull through the last two loops.
  • Half double crochetIt can be used as an alternative to double crochet. After pulling up a loop, yarn over and pull through all three loops.
